Joel is the Author of the book,
Mastering Strategic Risk: A Framework for Transforming Organizations
Throughout his remarkable 20 year career, Joel McPhee has been at the epicenter of the most pressing issues facing large, complex organizations. A visionary leader, he brings innovative solutions to challenges facing organizations.
Joel was an executive at several top financial services companies, leading the way in solving some of the industry's most formidable challenges. These organizations include Wells Fargo, JPMorgan Chase, and Huntington Bank. Most recently he was a senior executive at Wells Fargo Corporation, taking on key assignments at this industry giant. His roles focused on transforming the operating environment of the bank.
His assignments included leading what has been heralded as one of the most successful transformation initiatives in company history. Through this program, Joel led a cross-enterprise team of leaders and employees in reducing Wells Fargo's $ 3 billion dollar Cap ex and Revenue project portfolio. Eventually, the portfolio was reduced by over 50% and the initiative drove over a hundred million dollars to the company's bottom line. This landmark enterprise initiative introduced a unique approach to address the company's process for allocating capital, aligned strategic priorities with limited corporate resources, and addressed significant operational challenges. It also served as a critical catalyst for enterprise-wide change as it identified major cultural issues that served as significant barriers to peak performance. Through the Program the company also streamlined internal processes, institutionalized new methodologies firm-wide and remediated systemic challenges in its project management capabilities.
Joel was also a Senior Executive and Operating Committee member in the company's 18,000-employee Technology, Operations and eCommerce Division. While in this Division, he held the key roles of Chief Risk Officer and Head of its Global Services Group (responsible for off-shoring and outsourcing).
In addition to these assignments, Joel was appointed by the CEO to be a key member of two executive steering committees: The first was charged with creating and leading Wachovia's Business Resiliency and Disaster Recovery Strategy and Plan, and the second was charged with creating Wachovia's Core Values, which eventually played a key role in shaping the company’s corporate culture.
Joel, who is also an Attorney, co-authored the article "Why Government Regulators Need Corporate Boot Camp" for The Washington Post. He is a sought-after industry expert and is quoted regularly in industry articles. Most recently his thoughts on off-shore banking practices were published in Bank Technology News in the article "A Reversal of Fortune." He is also a frequent panelist at business and economic conferences.
Currently, Joel is based in Charlotte, North Carolina, and is a Business Strategist providing services to Fortune 500 companies. Drawing on his successful years in top corporations, he focuses on areas such as organizational change and transformation, Strategic Advisory, and Regulatory and Operational Risk Management.
